As demonstrated by the map graphic below, in FY 2024, Arkansas led the way with nearly six EEOC charges filed for every 10,000 people living in the state. Other notable states in this per-capita category include Georgia (5.5 charges per 10,000 residents), Nevada (4.5), Mississippi (4.5), and Tennessee (4.3). In terms of the types of charges filed with the EEOC, retaliation is consistently the most common allegation, outpacing the next most popular category (typically disability discrimination or harassment) by at least 10,000 charges per year. In FY 2024, retaliation claims outpaced the next category by about 7,000 charges. In line with that trend, retaliation claims accounted for approximately 48% of all charges filed in FY 2024. Despite the continued prevalence of retaliation claims, the EEOC did report a substantial decrease in charges alleging retaliation in FY 2024, as retaliation claims were asserted in fewer than 50% of total charges for the first time since FY 2017. The next most popular charge types in FY 2024 after retaliation were harassment, disability discrimination, and race discrimination.
